CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Karl could have kicked himself. His attention had been taken up with Yelena and he had completely lost his focus. He had walked into the ambush like a rookie.

The Wehrmacht soldiers pointed their rifles at Karl and Yelena. They were at a range where it would be hard to miss. The soldier in back of Karl took his rifle. He then made Karl take off his great coat, patted him down and found the P-38.

As he removed the pistol Karl saw from the German's uniform that he was a corporal and was most likely in charge of the other two men. The corporal took a step away from Karl, still covering them with the Luger. He surveyed the weapons he had taken.

"An American pistol and a German rifle. An interesting collection for a Russian soldier, don't you think?" He threw Karl's pistol to one of his men. "Here Dieter. You need a pistol."

"Stealing SS property is considered a serious crime," said Karl. "It could see you shot or sent to the front after my superiors speak to your officer."

"He is German," said Dieter, who now looked decidedly worried. "Perhaps we should just let them go."

The corporal shook his head. "What is he doing dressed as a Russian soldier? The SS do not go undercover and we weren't told of any SS detail in this area. They're all holed up in the Reichstag waiting to die."

"Since when did the SS discuss tactics and details with a common corporal in the Wehrmacht?" said Karl superciliously. "Return the weapons and I will see that you are only disciplined lightly for this infraction."

"And let go of such a fine rifle? I don't think so."

"We don't want him telling his superiors," said Dieter, who was clearly losing his nerve. "We don't want to get in trouble."

"We're already in trouble," said the corporal. "And he won't be able to tell a soul if he's dead."

"Ah, so you men are the deserters who shot their officer," said Karl, trying to bluff his way out with guess work. "I thought it was strange to see a mere corporal carrying a Luger."

"God in heaven he knows," said Dieter. "They're already after us, we'll never get away with it. I told you we wouldn't."

"Shut your mouth," said the corporal. "He doesn't know anything, how could he?"

"We don't take kindly to the murder of German officers in the SS," Karl said, pressing his advantage. "Did you really think we would let it go unpunished? In these dark hours for the Reich discipline is more important than ever. Do you think I am here alone?"

Dieter and the other Wehrmacht soldier began to look nervously around them. "While I distracted you my men have surrounded you. Lay down your weapons this instant." Karl was probing for the weak link in the three soldiers, hoping to get them to falter just enough to give him an opening for attack.

"Ridiculous," sneered the corporal. "If your men are all around us let them show themselves."

"They await my signal.
